Best for the price, March 29, 2012

Here’s the bottom line – it’s a terrific lens. Today’s glass is light years beyond what we had even ten years ago, so don’t be discouraged by the negative reviews you see. I mean that in a general way, not just for this lens. Anybody who has issues with any modern lens has WAY too much time on their hands.

Bad news first: It’s cheaply made. The plastic feels REALLY flimsy. That’s why it doesn’t get 5 stars. It just feels cheap. You spend upwards of $700 on a camera and you get this piece of **** included. It’s not fun to use. You feel like you have a child’s toy, not state-of-the-art Canon engineering.

Still … the lens works. And that’s what it’s all about. I don’t know, long term, how it will stand up, but for now it’s a very functional, very useful lens. On a crop-body camera like the T2i you get something like 30-90mm, your typical 3x range. At f3.5-5.6 it’s a tad slow, but still useful. On a modern digital camera, with variable ISO, you won’t even notice.

Bottom line is I own Canon L glass, professional grade, but I use this little guy a lot.

Best bang for the buck for DSLR video, July 11, 2012
    Verified Purchase(What’s this?)
This review is from: Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II SLR Lens – Mark II (Accessory)
Please note: this review is for shooting video with this lens only.

I’ve been shooting DSLR video on my Canon 7D for a little over a year now, and really love the quality of the footage from the camera. One thing that is always tough to do with DSLR video though is shoot handheld without getting shake or jitter in your shots. I initially purchased 2 high end zoom lenses (the 24-70L 2.8 and the 70-200L 2.8) and could get nice shots, but handheld footage was always unusable without a camera rig.

Well my friend had this little kit lens on a road trip, and I decided to try it and see how the IS (image stabilization) feature worked when shooting video. Wow, what a difference! All the handheld shots I couldn’t get before were now possible. We filmed a little documentary and this lens was used 90% of the time without a camera rig.

The difference in quality between this and the L lenses for video was hard for me to see, and sometimes I couldn’t tell the difference. The L lenses are definitely better in low light and more robust, but they are also heavier too. So having this little tiny lens on the camera made handheld shots a pleasure to shoot. The focus ring is a little flimsy, but once I got used to it, was not so bad.

After we got back from the trip, I looked the lens up on Amazon and got a used one for under $100! (I paid over $1000 for each L lens…crazy!) This lens is by FAR the best bang for the buck when shooting DSLR video. For stills, I still stick with my L zooms. Thinking of upgrading to the 2.8 IS zoom in the future to get better low light performance and better build construction. But for now this is a great lens for handheld video work.
