Cheaper than Olympus’ hood, June 2, 2011

This hood fits well on the new 14-42mm (versions II and II R only) kit lens for Olympus Pen cameras. It’s also easily reversed on the lens for storage, which is very convenient.
As Olympus overcharges for its brand of hood this is an excellent alternative.

Just like any hood for a zoom lens, it is designed not to vignette at the wide-angle setting. The corollary of this is that it is provides only little shade at the telephoto setting. Can’t do much about that, though, it’s inherent in zooms.

Caution: This hood doesn’t fit the original “Mark I” 14-42mm kit lens (which has a 40.5mm filter thread and no bayonet mounting). It only fits the new versions II and II R which have a bayonet mounting on the front (and have a 37mm filter thread).

The Olympus hood costs something like $40. This one fits. Yay! I need to make my review longer, but I’m not sure exactly how.
