    This review is from: PENTAX telephoto zoom lens HD PENTAX-DA55-300mmF4-5.8ED K mount APS-C size sensor 22270 (Camera)
    Bottom line: 55mm-100mm — below average; 100-200mm — average; 200-300mm – above average

    Optically this lens is probably a complete copy of the previous version, at least subjectively the pictures look exactly the same and it has the same weaknesses and strengths. The lens has a new HD coating, but I don’t have any test that would reveal its superiority to the old SMC coating. The lens has very good color contrast, very solid build — a combination of hard plastic and metal. The zoom ring is stiff, there is no creep, but zooming during video will be jerky. The fully extended barrel shows very little play, nothing to worry about. Focusing is noisy as you would expect from a screw-drive AF, but it’s fast and precise, I didn’t see any hunting even in low light, there was no need for AF microadjustment either.
    Sharpness looks the same as the previous version. Unlike every other consumer zoom, this lens gets better on the long end. My subjective observations:

    @55mm f/4: center is slightly soft, but usable; corners are very soft
    @55mm f/5.6: center is very good; corners are still soft
    @55mm f/8: center is the same as f/5.6; corners are better, but extreme corners still soft;
    @55mm f/11-f/22: the lens only gets softer; but performance is even across the frame
    @100mm f/4: center is slightly soft; the corners are softer, but not dramatically
    @100mm f/5.6: center is good; corners slightly soft
    @100mm f/8: center is good; corners slightly soft; more even performance than at f/5.6
    @100mm f/11-22: more even but softer than at f/8
    @200mm: slightly better than at 100mm
    @300mm f/5.8: the lens gets surprisingly good — very sharp center, slightly soft corners
    @300mm f/8: same as f/5.8; the corner softness almost undetectable
    @300mm f/11: slightly less sharp center; slightly sharper corners
    @300mm f/32: lens is soft, practically unusable

    Distortion is not significant, slight pincushion on the long end. Vignetting is not generally noticeable. CA is well controlled, only slightly noticeable in the extreme corners at 300mm.
    The F-stop reported by the lens is likely imprecise. Though the lens shows the same f/4.5 in 100-200mm range, the actual brightness falls and exposure has to increase by about 25% on the long end. Same happens after 200mm, where the lens reports f/5.6-5.8, and in reality the it gets progressively dimmer. In comparison to Sony 55-300 I tested, the Pentax 55-300 measured some 20-40% less light than Sony at 100-300mm range when wide open.
